York business raises over £500 for non-profit group in first month of opening

York independent business The Hearing Place have raised hundreds of pounds for a local non-profit organisation.

Last month, The Hearing Place opened their new clinic in Haxby – and during its first opening two weeks, donated £5 per ear wax removal service to Do Drop Inn, which provides low-cost lunches locally.

The Hearing Place team donated a total of £510 to the non-profit community organisation.

Owners Jess and Sam Kyei-Yamoah founded The Hearing Place in 2020.

The Hearing Place opened the the doors of its new Haxby clinic with a little help from the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Martin Rowley BEM, and the YorkMix team.

The Haxby location was previously an empty greengrocer’s shop, and Jess and Sam have totally transformed the unit – which now has a new reception area with coffee station, and private treatment rooms.

And the first month has been a huge success.

“We’ve absolutely loved our first month at Haxby, we’ve met so many lovely new customers and have been very busy,” said Jess.

“The local support has been phenomenal and we’ve felt truly welcomed. So many people have commented how much they love the new clinic, and the coffee station is going down well. Those that knew it as a greengrocer say it’s unrecognisable! Thank you, Haxby.”

The Hearing Place also won two awards this year in our YorkMix Choice Awards 2025 – the Gold award for Best Household Service and the Silver Award for Best Independent High Street Business.

The Hearing Place offers professional ear and hearing care services, including ear wax removal, hearing assessments, and a hearing aid fitting and repair service. The team use an award-winning micro-suction system for ear wax removal, which gently sucks out any wax safely and painlessly. And people can see ‘before and after’ photos of their ears.

As well as Haxby, it holds regular clinics at Clifton Moor and Murton, plus Malton, Selby, Boston Spa, Sherburn In Elmet and Easingwold. Clients can also choose to have any service as a home visit.

The Hearing Place clinic in Haxby is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm. It’s also open until 2.30pm on alternative Saturdays, and until 7pm on alternative Mondays (by appointment only).
