Police take several uninsured cars off the road

North Yorkshire Police have taken several cars off the road because they don’t have insurance.

Driving without insurance is not only flouting the law but it’s dangerous, as it puts law abiding road users at risk.

As a force, Police say, they make no apology for doing this. Having insurance is about protecting every road user and acting in the interests of fairness should a collision or incident occur. They also find that uninsured drivers are frequently linked to criminal activity and other road related offences.

Like other police forces, North Yorkshire Police have access to central records which are managed by the Motor Insurance Bureau. These databases feed into systems such as ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) and notify officers when a potential uninsured vehicle is active.

Once they receive an alert, officers then make an attempt to stop the vehicle and run a more thorough detailed check at the roadside to verify if there is an insurance policy or not.

If you choose to drive uninsured, they will probably seize your vehicle which means you will have to find an alternative method for getting to your destination.

You could also receive a Fixed Penalty Notice, points on your license and when you do take out an insurance policy you will find that the premium will have probably gone up. The fact that some drivers choose to drive uninsured puts the premium up for other road users too.

Inspector Clive Turner from North Yorkshire Police said: “Road safety remains a key priority for North Yorkshire Police and by targeting uninsured drivers we’re aiming to reduce the risk to other road users.

“Driving without valid insurance is not only against the law, but it also devastates the lives of many road users each year.

“We will continue to be relentless in our approach to taking uninsured drivers off North Yorkshire’s roads during this operation and all year round.”
