Video and pictures: York pays tribute to the fallen on Remembrance Sunday

York came together today to remember the fallen.

Veterans, the armed forces, city leaders and residents gathered for a moving ceremony in the War Memorial Gardens on Remembrance Sunday.

The parade left Clifford’s Tower at 10.20am and made its way via the Mansion House to the York war memorial.

There, the Ode to The Fallen – with its powerful words “We will remember them” – was read before the Last Post was sounded.

At 11am, an artillery gun fired one round across the River Ouse to mark the start of two minutes’ silence.

The wreath laying ceremony was led by the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire Jo Ropner and the Lord Mayor of York Cllr Martin Rowley.

The Service of Remembrance was led by the Reverend Deiniol Morgan. In his sermon, he paid tribute to the civilians who had courageously put themselves in danger to save others during the recent knife attack on an LNER train.

Providing music for the parade and service were the York Railway Institute Band and the Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment.

Following prayers, hymns, the National Anthem and a review of the parade, the Memorial Gardens service was over.

The parade then returned to St Helen’s Square where the Mansion House flag was lowered to half-mast, as a mark of respect.
