An established hair salon has opened its third location in York – aiming to provide a luxury service that’s open to everyone.
Mark Lee, who’s from York, has become a renowned name in hairdressing over the past two decades, and now he’s returning to his roots by opening his third salon on Fulford Road, York.
Mark has been hairdressing for 24 years. Originally starting in York, he moved 12 years ago over to Pocklington where he started his business Mark Lee Hairdressing.
“We’ve just grown from there,” Mark said, with another location open in Beverley.
The Beverley salon has been open for nearly two years, and was named a finalist for Best New Salon at The UK Hair and Beauty Awards 2025, placing 14 out of 22,000 applicants. The Pocklington salon was also a finalist in the awards.
Now, the next step has been opening in York.
“I know York really well, it’s a lovely place,” said Mark. “I’m a little bit out of the city centre, because we like to be able to offer a city centre feel but not necessarily city centre prices.”
However, it wasn’t an easy decision to move back into York. “It’s always been a bit daunting coming back to York,” said Mark. “The prices have become so high for rent and rates.”
Mark is passionate about delivering a luxury service that is open to everyone.
“If you ask anybody about our brand, it’s about how it makes them feel when they come in,” explained Mark. “Nobody is judged, nobody’s looked upon, no matter what style you want, we will work with you and get you the best you possibly can.”
Mark Lee Hairdressing have a range of different stylists, of different ages, styles who have their own specialities and techniques, and the salon is open to all genders.
The salon offers complimentary drinks with your service from bubbles and beers to teas, coffees and soft drinks.
“Our clients start from five years old to 80 years old – we give that city centre luxury to everybody.”
“For us, it’s delivering the whole package from the moment they walk in to the moment they leave.
“The hair is just one part of it. It’s all about the service that they get – from the apprentices, to the shampoos, to the blow dry, to the way they feel when they leave.”
Mark Lee Hairdressing on Fulford Road opened on 1 October. “It’s doing really well, we’ve had really good feedback. We’ve got a team here that’s still growing.”
“The buildings I choose tend to be quite old, so they need a lot of work,” said Mark. “I do all the work myself – from the ground up to walls, to units, to benches, everything.”
At the moment, the new salon has created around six jobs, which will eventually grow to 10.
Mark Lee Hairdressing uses 100% Wella hair products. The salon offers a 15% off for students, NHS workers, pensioners, and military personnel.
Mark hopes to open a couple more salons in the future, “but we are going to get our head down as a team and have a couple of years with the salons we’ve got now.”

Mark Lee Hairdressing York is open Tuesdays to Saturdays. Opening times are Tue 9am-7pm, Wed 9am-5pm, Thu 9am-7pm, Fri 9am-5pm, and Sat 8:30am to 5:30pm.
