Clear-up to begin after travellers leave York playing fields

A clear-up is set to begin at a York playing fields today (Wednesday).

It comes after travellers left Chesney Fields, off Foxwood Lane, after the council secured an eviction notice yesterday.

They had been on the site for a week.

They left a lot of rubbish behind on the fields.

Residents contacted Westfield Ward Cllr Andrew Waller about the state Chesneys Field had been left in.

The Liberal Democrat councillor told YorkMix: “Residents called me around about lunchtime to go and meet with them to see what was on the field. There was a large amount of conifer and hedge clippings on the area behind St Stephen’s Road.

“There were a lot of bags that had been dotted around the side of the care home across the fence, so there was a large amount of material that I photographed and sent through to the public realm team to deal with.”

He said the people who contacted him were concerned about the situation.

“They were very upset about the amount of material that had been left, some had been bagged and left by the bin near Foxwood Lane, and that was very controlled.

“But there was a large amount of material, a swimming pool, and quite a range of hedge clippings, large pile of conifers.

“So I think it was just the scale of things that people were quite upset about.”

He believes the City of York Council public realm team will be in to clear up the park today.
