Travellers leave after eviction from York playing fields

Travellers have left a York playing fields following a court hearing.

The travellers who were camped on Chesney Fields, off Foxwood Lane, left the site as York Magistrate’s Court granted an eviction order on Tuesday, May 26.

Those pitched up at the Foxwood playing fields were ordered to leave immediately and were gone by Tuesday afternoon, the council confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

York Magistrate’s Court’s ruling after Tuesday’s hearing comes after a legal notice served on the travellers expired at 2pm on Friday, May 22.

The Direction to Leave was served on the encampment following reports on local councillors’ social media pages of the travellers’ arrival on Tuesday, 19 May.

It follows encampents on the playing fields in April last year and July 2024, LDRS understands.

The notice served by the council stated the failure to leave the site by Friday or returning within three months could lead to prosecution and a £1,000 fine if convicted.

Local ward councillors took to social media following the travellers’ arrival, with Westfield Liberal Democrats saying they feared it would put the playing fields out of action for some time.

They added a number of residents had reported the camp to Liberal Democrat ward councillor Andrew Waller.

Westfield Labour councillors said council officials would conduct the necessary checks and serve notice on the travellers to leave following their arrival last week.
