Changes planned at ‘world-famous’ Scarborough fish and chip shop

A ‘world-famous’ fish and chips shop in North Yorkshire has applied for a premises licence from the council.

The award-winning Tunny Club at East Sandgate in Scarborough’s South Bay is seeking permission to sell alcohol and play live and recorded music.

​Nicholas Hartley’s application to North Yorkshire Council proposes various licensable activities seven days a week.

f the scheme is given the green light, the retail sale of alcohol would be permitted from 10am to 10pm.

​The exhibition of films would also be permitted from Monday to Sunday, as would playing live and recorded music.

The fish and chips establishment has received praise for the quality and freshness of its food in national and regional publications and newspapers, including The Times.

​Tunny Club caters to children and welcomes dogs, as well as boasting a lengthy list of celebrity clientele, according to its owners, including David Niven, John Wayne, Errol Flynn, and Charles Laughton.

​According to its website: “Whilst inside you’ll learn about Scarborough’s unique game fishing history.

​“On a sunny day, why not eat alfresco on our garden terrace. It’s the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of busy Sandside.”

​The establishment’s licence application is open to public representations until Friday, 19 December.
