Emergency services, York Rescue Boat and a member of the public came together to rescue a person in the river early this morning (Thursday).
Fire crews from York and Acomb were called to the incident on the River Ouse at 1.09am.
A person was in the water clinging to the boat. And a passer-by was holding onto the person in the river.
Mark Rochester of York Rescue Boat explained what happened: “A young gentleman had heard the calls from the river and ran round to the gentleman in the river and held on to him until we could arrive and affect the rescue.
“He didn’t go in. He managed to climb down a wall and onto a moored boat at the side of the river and hold onto the person in the river until, until we turned up.
“It was a very brave thing to do. We’ve had instances before where people have entered the river and become casualties as well. He managed to get himself into a safe space to actually hold onto the the young lad that was in the river.”
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews set up downstream safety and used a throw line for the people to hold onto until York Rescue Boat arrived.
“The people were then transported by boat to ambulance crews who were waiting on a bank side.”
