York City heroes visit city café to try sandwich created in their honour

A York cafe welcomed several York City players following their weekend celebrations – and created a sandwich in their honour!

York City players visited Days cafe on Parliament Street yesterday, after days of celebrating their landmark season win against Rochdale on Saturday, crowning them National League Champions and promoting them into the Football League.

Joe Grey, Alex Newby, Callum Howe, Ryan Fallowfield and Josh Stones – who scored the outrageous goal in the 113th minute – stopped by the cafe to tuck into full Yorkshire breakfasts and Days’ renowned sandwiches.

During the visit, Days unveiled a brand-new special: ‘The Mighty Joe’, created in honour of Joe Grey, who has been instrumental in the club’s success this season.

Designed in collaboration by the café’s head chef, Martin Stones, and Grey himself, the sandwich features panko breaded chicken, sun-dried tomato and basil pesto, shredded lettuce, Parmesan and garlic truffle aioli, served in either flatbread or sourdough.

The Mighty Joe will run as a limited edition, with £1 from every sandwich sold going to York Foodbank.

Days owner, Rob Collins, said: “York are champions – there’s a real buzz in York right now thanks to these boys.

“They came in after three days of celebrating and they still seemed like they’re on cloud 9!”

Days is open on Parliament Street every day from 9am to 5pm. They also have a sister venue on Low Petergate. Find out more about the independent cafe at their Instagram page here.
