Simply incredible: 30+ pictures of York City’s most joyous day

It was the most amazing day.

York City’s outrageous goal in the 113th minute of the season’s showdown at Rochdale saw them crowned National League Champions.

And it rocketed them back into the Football League for the first time in ten years.

The City winner came after fans were heartbroken by a 95th minute goal by Rochdale – which appeared to have sealed their victory and promotion.

But after a pitch invasion by celebrating Rochdale fans, City regrouped. One last attack saw striker Josh Stones poke the ball over the line – and York’s dreams came true.

Robert Beaumont, a City fan for 56 years, watched the drama unfold with thousands of fans on the big screens at LNER Community Stadium.

“It was absolutely exhilarating going from the emotion of being so so sad when Rochdale goal went in to absolute euphoria when we scored right at the end,” he told YorkMix.

“I’ve supported York City since 1970 and I honestly don’t think I’ve gone from one extreme of emotion to another ever in all those years, it was fabulous.”

Robert said the promotion was thoroughly deserved. “It’s been an amazing season for City fans, one of the best seasons I’ve ever witnessed.”

He was reminded of the 1983/84 season under Denis Smith, when City were champions of the old Division 4 with 101 points.

“Stuart Maynard has assembled a very similar team, that plays for each other that’s brilliant, an attack that defends, and crucially, never, ever gives up.

“The feel good factor in the city now is going to be amazing. League Two football is what we deserve.”

Here’s how a never-to-be-forgotten day unfolded, in pictures.
