Scarborough teenagers suffer life-changing injuries in fireworks horror

The Scarborough youngsters who were taken to hospital after fireworks went off in their hands have suffered life-changing injuries.

Scarborough & Whitby MP Alison Hume has said her thoughts are with the 18-year-olds and their families.

It comes as the grandfather of one of those hurt has shared a message saying his grandchild will need “multiple surgeries and skin grafts” for his injuries.

As YorkMix reported earlier, emergency services were called to the beach in Scarborough at about 7.15pm last night, Bonfire Night.

Police said one youngster suffered facial injuries, the other hand injuries. They said both casualties were believed to be holding the fireworks at the time.

The air ambulance was summoned but in the end they were taken to hospital by road ambulance.

Ms Hume MP said: “I am so upset to hear about the life-changing injuries sustained by two teenagers last night on Scarborough foreshore near the lifeboat station.

“Both of them were injured by fireworks; one to a hand and the other to their face. This is a terrible accident and my thoughts are with both the 18-year-olds and their families.”

She also urged anyone who’d published “graphic videos” of the incident online to take them down as they were causing distress to the families involved.

In a post shared on the Scarborough Moan Facebook page, the grandfather of one of the boys writes: “He and his friends are both amazing young lads and are not irresponsible eejits.

“Until we as family know exactly what happened everything is speculation.

“They both have life changing injuries and my grandson is having to have multiple surgeries and skin grafts and everything that goes with his trauma to his hand.

“He had dreams, a job he loved and was saving for a mortgage all at 18, so don’t judge my grandson and his friend for one moment of madness, craziness, confusion, whatever it was.

“Even after my grandson’s friend received his injuries to his eye he could see my grandson was walking about in total shock and in trouble injury-wise, and took his belt of to act as a tourniquet for my grandson whilst everyone else was to busy videoing him.”

He urged people to refrain from negative comments. “It is not helping anyone and these poor boys are going through hell.”
