Video and pix: York Pride sparkles in the sunshine

What a glorious day for a celebration!

The sun is shining on York Pride today, making all the glitter sparkle and every rainbow flag pop.

There was a huge turnout in the city centre for one of York’s biggest and best events, as people of all ages assembled to celebrate diversity and togetherness.

Andrew, from the Movie Mania auction house, was accompanied by both ET and Mr Blobby in his cycle float.

“Every year we do something film-themed. Last year it was Jurassic Park, and because we sell film memorabilia, it relates very well,” he told YorkMix Radio.

“And it’s just really bonkers as well, and that’s the whole ethos of Pride – fun and joyfulness.

He added: “Last year 17,500 people attended, this year, probably more.

“It really is fantastic, and you know, we’ve got such a great sunny day as well. When the world is so angry at the moment, we need more joy.

“We need to celebrate equality diversity, and it’s just, it’s just wonderful.”

Thor’s Tipi in Parliament Street hosted the pre-parade party. Then thousands of people set off from the city centre for Knavesmire where an afternoon of live music and performances was headlined by former Spice Girl Nadine Coyle.

The parade was cheered along the route. There was even a rainbow waterfall on Bishopthorpe Road created by Rich Musk.
