York roads remain closed today (Monday) as repair work continues following the water mains burst that flooded a suburb.
As YorkMix reported last night, Salisbury Road off Water End and surrounding streets were underwater after the 21-inch water main ruptured.
It left a gaping hole on the corner of Balfour Street and Salisbury Terrace.
Yorkshire Water engineers shut off the water last night, leaving people in areas including Acomb, Dringhouses, Poppleton and Shipton Road with no water or low water pressure.
Water is now back on. Work is underway to fix the burst pipe and repair the damaged road.
A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “We isolated a burst water main between Salisbury Terrace and Jubilee Terrace in York on Sunday evening.
“The leak was stopped promptly, and our team are now working to fix the burst pipe and repair significant damage to the road surface.
“We rerouted water around our network yesterday evening so that all customers have water supplies.
“So that our team can fix the pipe and road surface safely, there is a temporary road closure in place on Salisbury Terrace.
“Access will be maintained to Salisbury Terrace via Lincoln Street and temporary access to Balfour Street has been set up via Swinerton Avenue.
“We’re working to get everything back to normal as soon as possible and apologise for any inconvenience.”
The latest update on the Yorkshire Water website says: “There is a temporary road closure between Salisbury Terrace and Jubilee Terrace. Stephenson Way, Carnot Street, Roseberry Street and Balfour Street.
“Swinnerton Avenue bollards have been removed which will take vehicles onto Lincoln street, while we carry out essential repairs.”
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to the incident at 7.39pm on Sunday.
A spokesperson said: “Crews from Acomb responded to multiple reports of a burst 21 inch water main in a residential street.
“The flooding affected the street and two premises.
“Crews pumped out the basement of a public house and blocked water access from an affected property. The incident was left in the hands of City of York Council.”
