York camper van blaze: Man arrested on suspicion of arson

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after the blaze that all but destroyed a camper van last night (Thursday).

As we reported, the vehicle went up in flames on Beaconsfield Street, which was sealed off for several hours.

The white camper van was extensively damaged by the fire, and two cars parked nearby were partially melted.

Nearby homes had damaged windows, and the Headline Barbers was badly damaged due to the blaze.

Several households had to be evacuated as a safety precaution, but they were allowed back in their homes by 11.40pm.

A 58-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “The suspect remains in custody for questioning while the investigation continues.

“It is being treated as an isolated incident with no threat to the wider public.

“Witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage are being urged to come forward.”
