Selby Olympia Football Club has been hit by fire and damage caused by vandals again.
This time it wasn’t just smashed windows at the club on Recreation Road, it was a fire set right outside the changing rooms.
Fortunately someone saw what seemed to be a small group of children/teenagers starting it and contacted the fire brigade before it did even more serious damage to facilities.
The police are investigating but this latest incident has pushed the club to the brink and their chairman, Howard Thompson, says they just can’t cope financially with the club close to collapse.
Vandalism has been a problem over the last couple of years where damage has been easy to repair. Now the cabins that act as changing rooms have been burnt and damaged and that can’t be fixed.
The club’s history in organised football dates back to the mid-1920s and was previously linked to BOCM.
Mr Thompson, who’s been involved with the club for 20 years, has told YorkMix Radio that he has told his team to see if they can find someone who might have some secure steel containers to replace changing areas that have been smashed up.
The club would be grateful for any assistance to help them continue.
He added that he was beyond angry now and the people who have done this horrific thing to the club are horrible.
