The blaze that tore through a farmer’s field in York and threatened to engulf homes is now believed to have been started by a lighter.
Dozens of firefighters tackled the fire which was first reported at 3.30pm last Sunday (12 July) off Askham Lane.
Today North Yorkshire Police said it is believed to be started using a lighter. It caused £30,000 of damage.

This morning officers arrested four 14-year-olds – two boys and two girls – in connection with this incident.
Following further enquiries, the two girls who were previously arrested are no longer being treated as suspects in relation to this particular fire.
However, they are still under investigation in connection with a separate arson reported later that same evening.
Police say they are not seeking anyone else in connection with this incident.
“An investigation indicated that the fire was started using a lighter before rapidly spreading across the field and becoming uncontrollable within a very short period of time,” a force spokesperson said.

Sgt Ambler of York Outer Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with fire-setting. What may begin as a seemingly minor act can quickly escalate, causing extensive damage, placing lives at risk, and placing significant demands on emergency services.
“With the current warm, dry weather conditions, even a small flame can have devastating consequences.
“We would urge parents, carers and young people to be aware of these risks and to discuss the very real dangers of starting fires in open spaces.”
He added: “I would like to place my sincere thanks to our colleagues at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for their swift and professional response in tackling what became a significant fire.
“I would also like to thank members of the local community for their support and assistance.”
