Firefighters are tackling a large fire in fields in York this afternoon.
They’ve been called to the blaze which is in fields between Askham Lane and Alness Drive in Acomb.
A number of appliances are at the scene.
Fire location

One person posted on a York Facebook page: “It’s at the back of my mum’s house. She’s pretty worried tbh. It’s the whole field.”
Smoke can be seen for miles. It is drifting across Askham Lane causing a hazard to traffic.

The smoke is so bad across Moor Lane that drivers are having to turn back.
A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently dealing with an ongoing incident in the Askham Lane area of York.
“The road has since been reopened but the public are advised to avoid the area at this time.”
It is also very visible from Woodfest, formerly known as the Woodthorpe Summer Festival.
Cllr Stephen Fenton, who represents Dringhouses and Woodthorpe ward on City of York Council, told YorkMix: “It turns out there’s been a field fire just off Moor Lane in Woodthorpe, near to Alness Drive.
“I’ve just been up to take a look. The fire service are on the scene, and the farmer, and it seems to have been brought under control.
“We don’t yet know the the cause of the fire, but there was a similar fire yesterday, not too far away in Foxwood Park, which I think was deliberately set. So, if if this fire again has been a deliberate act, it does indicate a worrying trend.
“But a significant amount of crop has been been burned, and there’s obviously obvious concern at the proximity of the fire to to nearby housing.

More as we get it.
