A community bar is to close for several weeks to undertake a major renovation.
The Angel On The Green on Bishopthorpe Road will shut on New Year’s Day to carry out the work, reopening in February.
The main aim of the transformation is to create more room for pubgoers.
“The main plan is to create a bigger and better space while retaining the same intimate atmosphere we love,” the owners said in a social media post.
“Fridays and Saturdays are really busy at the Angel and it makes us sad that our favourite people (you lot) sometimes cant find a seat at our peak times.”

Internal walls will be knocked through to create this new space.
A new bar will be installed too. “Imagine the current one looping round into the middle room.
With this extra space, we are doubling its size and the seats available.”
The new bar will have two dedicated cocktail stations.

There will also be a dedicated space for performers so the Angel can programme a wider range of live music.
The Angel On The Green opened in 2016. It was created in part of the Cycle Heaven shop by Pete Kilbane and Terry Ashton, aiming to be a café during the day and a bar at night.
In their social media post, the owners said: “Over the past nine years, the Angel has transformed, finding its current form when Bella took over in December 2022.
“At times we’ve gone through very difficult periods.

“Over these past three years we’ve created a place which has a genuine community and unique atmosphere.”
It will close after a New Year’s Eve “mega party”, and they plan a big reopening bash in February.
They added: At the heart of the Angel’s mission statement is to create an independent community spot for York.
“We feel that mission is going to plan but the time has come to take our next steps.”
