Cars and motorbikes from the Cold War period will be rolling into Yorkshire Air Museum this weekend – as one of the Museum’s most popular events makes its return.
Cold War Wheels is a chance to remember the period of history between the 60s and 80s – when East and West were at loggerheads – through the cars and bikes we drove and rode. It’s held against a backdrop of the museum’s collection of Cold War jets.
Among the vehicles on show will be icons of the time like the Ford Capri, Triumph Stag and even a vintage double decker.

The event will take place at Yorkshire Air Museum on Sunday 21 June, which is also Father’s Day.
Yorkshire Air Museum marketing manager, Jerry Ibbotson, said: “Cold War Wheels is now in its fourth year and is a really popular event.
“We hold a 1940s weekend in May of each year, when we take people back to that period of history. This is like that – but with the nineteen sixties to eighties. People can reminisce about the cars and bikes they remember seeing when they were younger. We even throw in some period music, instead of the wartime songs we normally play here at the Museum.
“This year, there will be something else too. We’ve got a display of a classic 1960s toy – the Triang Minic Motorway. It’s like a cross between a slot-car track and model trainset!
“We’re also reviving a series of short videos – Cold War Stories – we produced in 2023 for our Cold War exhibition that year. These are first-hand accounts of the period, from a nuclear bomber pilot to someone who grew up in the Soviet Union; that will play in the Museum cinema all day.”
Normal admissions apply for the event, so no special tickets are required – but find out more about the event at the Yorkshire Air Museum website.
