Plans for two new padel courts at a sports centre in a York village have been lodged with City of York Council.
Dunnington Playing Fields Association has applied to put two padel courts on land at the Dunnington’s Sports and Social Club, in Common Road.
The association’s plans stated the courts aimed to increase the range of sports offered by the club.
Padel is a racket sport typically played in doubles on an enclosed court and features elements similar to both tennis and squash.
Plans showed the new courts would go on the site of an existing football pitch in an area which plans stated were currently under-utilised.
The football pitch would be remarked in a new position to free up space for the padel courts which would sit along the northern boundary of the club’s bowling green.
Moving the football pitch would also allow the club to have extra parking spaces, according to the plans.
The padel courts would feature daylight and time-controlled LED lighting which would be switched off after 10am.
Plans stated the court would be at the centre of the club site so light would not spill out onto neighbouring public spaces or homes.
Plans stated: “Padel is a very fast growing sport both in the UK and across the world and provides a sport that can be played by and appeals to a wide range of users, with everyone welcome from entry level to advanced players.”
