A couple who turned a well-known village pub into a “very special place” have announced they are leaving.
Phill and Vicky Upton have run The Ship Inn at Acaster Malbis since last August, and have revitalised the riverside venue.
Today they posted a message on Facebook: “It’s with very heavy hearts that we share that we’ll be leaving The Ship Inn at Acaster Malbis earlier than planned.
“We had hoped to be here for the full five years, but due to Phill’s health, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to step away sooner. When suitable tenants are found, we will be leaving.
“We’ve poured everything into The Ship, from completely gutting and redecorating it to creating the warm, welcoming pub, restaurant and hotel it is today.
“It’s been our pride and joy, and we truly hope we’ve made you proud of what we’ve accomplished here.”
The Ship Inn, which regularly has to shut due to flooding when the River Ouse rises, had been on an uncertain footing until Phill and Vicky took over, having been through a number of closures in recent years.

Customers have been lining up to send warm wishes to the couple after their announcement.
“Really sorry to hear this. It’s been lovely getting to know you both over the last two years and the way you’ve turned the Ship around is unbelievable,” one said.
“Credit to you both and the rest of the Ship team you’ve turned it into a very special place. Good luck for the next step,” a regular said.
Another wrote: “Shocked to hear this news , but health and family come first . You’ve worked so hard and done so much to make the Ship Inn what it is today.”
And a third said: “What a loss. You have all been amazing. We love eating and drinking with you! You had turned the pub around so you should be very proud of yourselves.”
