A driver called out emergency services after spotting flames coming from the bonnet while driving.
It happened at 10.25pm last night (Sunday) on the eastbound A64, Fulford to Grimston.
Police and firefighters went to the incident.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “After inspection, no fire was found but crews discovered a large amount of oil had expelled in the engine compartment causing the residual smoke.
“A thermal imaging camera was used to check there was no further risk of fire or hotspots.
“Small tools were used to isolate the vehicles battery and the incident was left with police to arrange recovery of the vehicle with the owner.”
