A street food favourite is a step closer to opening its doors in York city centre.
Plans have gone in for new signage at 17 Coney Street, which is set to become home to Yorkshire Burrito.
As reported by YorkMix last month, the empty shop unit next door to Waterstones has been teasing passers-by with brown paper covering the windows and a cheeky peephole inviting shoppers to “take a peek”.
Scanning the QR code behind the glass confirmed that the brand was heading to York.
Now a formal application for listed building consent has been submitted to City of York Council to install new signs and branding for the unit.
The Grade II listed building has had a varied history. It was last home to the short-lived bubble tea venue Bubbleology, which opened in 2023.
Before that, the unit hosted mobile phone shops including The Phone Store and Fone Land York, as well as beauty brand Rituals Home and Body Cosmetics.
Interestingly, the early 19th-century property also incorporates architectural elements salvaged from the former historic George Inn, including a surviving Tuscan stone column in the ground-floor shopfront.
Despite its name, Yorkshire Burrito is a London-born brand that has five permanent sites.
The fast food restaurant wraps traditional Sunday roasts, with braised beef, roast chicken, or cauliflower cheese, inside a freshly made Yorkshire pudding.
Their menu also features “loaded roasties” and gravy-drenched side dishes.
According to the design statement submitted by agents Design ID, the proposed changes at 17 Coney Street will respect the heritage of the historic building.
The branding will include an arrow graphic alongside the phrase “Come on in” in pink.
The planning documents emphasise that no structural changes will be made to the listed elements of the building. The Tuscan stone column and upper brickwork will remain untouched.
