There’s a brand new spot to get some tasty sandwiches in York.
Zibby’s, located at 2 Monkgate, York, is the city’s newest sandwich shop. It was previously home to Vi Coffee + Wine, which closed earlier this year.
With the slogan ‘no sad sandwiches’, Zibby’s is the sister venue to North South on Bootham and owners Rich and Laura Taylor are keen to make it the go-to spot for lunchtime.
YorkMix spoke with co-owner Rich to find out more.
“Zibby’s is a takeaway sandwich shop based around your classic sandwiches that you might find in a meal deal,” said Rich. “There’s a few specials thrown in on top with some great coffee alongside it.”

The inspiration behind opening Zibby’s was simple. “We love sandwiches! There’s some great sandwiches in York, and we think there’s room for some more.”
The sandwiches are all made fresh to order in front of you, with the option to get them toasted too.
Fillings include Tuna Crunch, Chicken Caesar, and Curried Chickpea. The Hoagie Roll specials this season include Cold Cuts (with gabagool, prosciutto, and salami) and Burrata Caprese – with more specials coming in the new year.

Sandwiches start from £6, with vegetarian and vegan options available.
“We try to keep the price of sandwiches reasonable, so that people who work around here might come once or twice a week instead of going to get a meal deal at Tescos or Sainsburys.”
The sandwich shop opened last week, on Saturday 13 December, and the reaction so far has been “really good, and good from the locals. We’ve had a lot of North South regulars who either came here to see what we were up to or didn’t realise it was us and have just popped in and seen me there making their coffee.”
Coffee starts from £3.30 and supplied by Indy Coffee Roasters. There are also baked treats available, such as almond croissants from Bakeri Baltzersen in Harrogate, and brownies and cookies baked by Laura herself.
The name Zibby’s comes from Rich and Laura’s daughter, Emmie. “She wanted to name it Zibby’s after her toy giraffe. That’s what you get if you ask your two-and-a-half year old to name your business!”
The entire sandwich shop has been a family effort, with Rich and Laura’s parents helping out with the renovation and babysitting duties. “Without them it wouldn’t have happened.”
Zibby’s is open every day from 8am to 3pm. Keep up to date with the sandwich shop at their Instagram page.
