New bookshop café to open in York after ‘absolutely incredible’ response

A new bookshop cafe is set to open in Acomb, York.

Books and Bevs pairs ‘excellent reads with creative hospitality’.

It’s currently operating as a pop-up inside The Speakcheesey on Walmgate, and now they’re planning to open their first bricks-and-mortar store at 89 Front Street in Acomb, York.

The founding team at Books & Bevs have had years of experience in the hospitality industry – now they’re making their dream of opening an independent bookshop a reality.

“We’re so excited to create a warm, welcoming and social atmosphere in our local village of Acomb,” Books & Bevs director, Joe Long, told YorkMix.

“We want to create a space for locals and visitors to find their next best read, find gifts for family and friends, meet friends for a coffee or just pop in to say hello.”

Though an exact opening date is yet to be announced, the bookshop aims to open its doors next month.

“The process of opening has been a whirlwind! We got the keys on the 11th November and have been working non stop to turn the site into our dream bookshop cafe,” said Joe.

“It’s been an amazing journey so far and we’re so grateful for the support we’ve had from family, friends and the local community in getting everything set up!”

Currently, inside The Speakcheesey, Books & Bevs are offering a selection of new and pre-loved books, as well as literary-inspired gifts such as bookmarks, pin badges, tote bags, and t-shirts.

The drink offering ranges from wines to beers to hot and soft drinks. The new bookshop will run alongside the pop-up location.

Joe said that the reaction so far from the community has been “absolutely incredible.”

“From our first announcement we’ve had an overwhelming amount of excitement and love for our new venture and we can’t wait to welcome people in for a Book and a Bev.”

Books & Bevs will join the latest bookshops to open in York, including the new Waterstones location at Monks Cross Shopping Park, and the upcoming Toppings, which is due to open in the city centre in 2026.
