Are your little ones totally space-obsessed? Or maybe your teenagers would love to spend an evening with real astronauts?
STEM Learning and ESERO-UK, in partnership with the Royal Institution, are hosting a Family Space Day at the National STEM Learning Centre, University of York, on Saturday 13 December 2025 — and it’s completely free to join.
There will be two sessions on the day tailored to specific ages, that explore the wonders of space and science with astronauts, space presenters and activities.
There are two events so you can pick the one that works best for your family:
Family Space Day: Afternoon (1:30–4pm) – For all ages
This relaxed, interactive session is perfect for families with children of all ages — from toddlers to teens. Here’s what you can look forward to:
- Meet real astronauts — Meganne Christian and John McFall from the European Space Agency will be sharing stories of training, missions, and life in space.
- Mission X astronaut training challenges — take part in fun, hands-on missions that mirror real astronaut tasks.
- Rocket building — make paper rockets, then launch them!
- Space chemistry experiments — learn how things behave in space through safe, exciting science.
- Astro-Pi coding workshop — try your hand at the same kind of code that runs on computers aboard the International Space Station.
- Q&A with astronauts, space presenters & scientists — ask anything you’ve ever wondered about space, rockets or being an astronaut.
Family Space Day: Evening (5–8pm) – For 11 + and families
If your kids are older (11+) or you’re looking for something more inspiring and a bit more grown-up, this evening slot is just right. Highlights include:
- A live-stream of the Royal Institution’s Christmas Lectures, presented this year by Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock
- Inspiration from astronauts, scientists, and space presenters, with the chance to dive into deeper discussions and ask your own big questions
Whether your kids are dreamers, future astronauts, or budding coders, or you just want to share a memorable family day, Family Space Day on Saturday 13 December is something not to miss.
Booking for the event is simple – one adult registers for the whole group, says how many of you are coming, and gives age ranges. Register here for the afternoon session or the evening session here.
