The driver, a 32-year-old man and sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the black Audi travelling out of Gatterick Garrison prior to the crash.

“We’re also appealing to anyone who may have captured the vehicle on their dashcam as it travelled through Catterick Garrison or when it left the road.”

The road was closed to allow emergency services to attend to the casualty, allow collision investigators to work the scene and to recover the vehicle. It reopened just before midnight.

No other vehicles were involved.
