25 years ago Gary Hart was driving along the M62 after being up all night talking to a woman online.
As he approached the bridge over the East Coast Main Line he fell asleep, swerved off the carriageway, down an embankment and ended up in the path of an intercity train that had just left York.
Within a short space of time a simple road traffic accident caused one of the worst rail disasters in living memory.
The GNER train hit Hart’s landrover, derailed and ended up in a head-on collision with a freight train coming the other way.
Two train drivers, two other GNER staff and six passengers died on February 28 2001/ Another 82 people were injured.
Andy Comfort, features editor of RAIL magazine has written a special article to mark the anniversary.
