Police believe a large stone object hit the windscreen of a car causing a serious accident on the A19 near York.
The incident happened on the southbound carriageway near Escrick just after 1pm on Wednesday (April 6). It involved an HGV and a black mini.
The driver of the mini, a 28-year-old woman from York, suffered a serious head injury in the accident. She was taken to the Leeds General Infirmary by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The woman remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A police spokeswoman said:
It is believed a large stone object has come off the road and struck the windscreen of the mini.
