‘It makes a huge difference’ – York Central donate bikes to vulnerable people in York

McLaren Property and Arlington Real Estate are supporting the YorkMix Toy Appeal again this Christmas by donating bikes to vulnerable people.

For the second year running, the developers behind the £2billion York Central regeneration project have donated bikes to the appeal – as part of their commitment to sustainability in the city.

Working with YorkMix and the City of York Council’s Social Care team, the bikes were sourced from sustainable pre-loved bike specialist Recycle York, based on Walmgate.

The local business helps to recycle over 5,000 bikes a year, and in its 13-year history has recycled over 50,000 bikes across North Yorkshire. It also provides workshops and seminars to schools, charities and other businesses.

Managing director of McLaren Regeneration, Tom Gilman, said, “To be a part of it again this year is fantastic, we’re proud to support such a great cause.

“I think it’s really important to support a local business like this and to help the community.

“Donating these bikes to young people in York, to help with their independence and social mobility, very much fits with our aspiration to create a sustainable new city quarter the local community will benefit from.

“We are incredibly grateful to the team at Recycle York, City of York Council and YorkMix for helping to bring together this brilliant initiative, and we’ll continue to support it going forward.”

“These bikes mean so much for our care leavers,” said Nicola Woodward, part of York Council’s Social Care pathway team.

“For one young man, it means he’s no longer having to take two buses to get to college. Another it means he can easily get to his family over Christmas.

“It really does make a huge difference to the people that we support and I know they are extremely grateful – it really will make their Christmas.”

The YorkMix Toy Appeal is an annual initiative to help ensure that no child wakes up on Christmas Day without a gift. It is supported by York Designer Outlet, Asda at Monks Cross, and JCT600 York, as well as a wide range of organisations and businesses throughout the city.
