‘I’m absolutely fine!’ says York City fan whose airborne foot went viral

A York City fan whose topsy-turvy goal celebration went viral has revealed: “I’m OK!”

Club photographer Tom Poole captured this brilliant image of the goal celebrations after City went 3-0 up at Wealdstone on Saturday.

It was only after looking more closely at the image that a fan’s trainer in the air revealed someone had gone for it big style.

York City’s always-on-it social media team put out Tom’s image with the words: “Will the person in the red shoe please let us know you are okay…”

To date, that post has been seen nearly 750,000 times.

Now YorkMix has tracked down the superfan in question – Jason Higgins. Breakfast Club host Leigh Nicholson did the detective work and spoke to Jason on air.

“I thought was a typical goal celebration,” Jason told the show.

“We were stood down at the front near the corner flag, and the players came in that direction to celebrate the goal.

“And as I leaned forward over the barrier, I kind of lifted myself up, and the momentum and the fans behind me kind of pushed me forward and I tippled over the barrier.

“What happened in that moment I’m holding on to the bottom of the advertising board rather than falling onto the pitch, and in that two, three second moment, Tom, the club photographer, managed to capture that image.”

Jason has had a lot of people contact him after the picture went around the world.

“I saw a couple of comments online around hope he’s OK, hope he’s not hurt himself. And I’mabsolutely fine.

“The fans had my legs and pulled me back over. I thought nothing of it. And I just happened to get sent the picture later on that evening. So just a funny, bizarre moment.”

He added: “It was just fortunate as well I had my York City club coloured trainers on, and also my York City socks.”

The goal was a special one – Dan Batty’s first for the club, and a real humdinger.

“No harm caused, and no injuries,” Jason told YorkMix. “And it was good to see Dan Batty get his first goal for the club. Maybe that caused the extra excitement as well to seal off a great win!

“What a bizarre photo to be doing the rounds on social media, but all good fun.”
