Horse has to be put down after two-vehicle crash

A horsebox and a car crashed on a North Yorkshire road this afternoon (Sunday).

Emergency crews were called to the collision on the A171 near Aislaby, west of Whitby, at 12.55pm.

Firefighters from Whitby and Lythe went to the scene, along with an animal rescue team from Malton.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “No persons were trapped in the vehicles.

“One horse was sadly put to sleep by a vet after suffering a broken leg.”

The road was closed for about three hours. It has now reopened.
