Flood warning in place for York, car park closed

There are two flood warnings in place in and near York today (Tuesday).

Rising levels of the Ouse are expected to cause flooding by the river.

While most of the city is open as usual, riverside paths will be blocked.

One flood warning is for the River Ouse at York – riverside properties.

The Environment Agency says: “Most affected will be properties on King’s Staith in York and riverside areas through York from Lendal Bridge to Millennium Bridge.

“The Foss Barrier is operating and riverside flood gates in York have been closed.”

St George’s Car Park and Rowntree Park are closed today.

The Viking Recorder is forecasting a peak river level of 3.49m at 10pm tonight (Tuesday, 2 December), lower than yesterday’s forecast. The top of the normal range is 1.9m.

A second flood warning is in place for the River Derwent at Stamford Bridge, affecting riverside footpaths and low-lying land and property in Stamford Bridge, including the Weir Caravan Park.

There are also three flood alerts (flooding is possible):

Today and tomorrow are forecast to be sunny and dry, with rain returning on Thursday.
