Firefighters called to tanker carrying nitric acid that was overheating

Two fire crews were called to an HGV tanker carrying nitric acid that was overheating.

Harrogate and Knaresborough crews responded to smoke coming from the lorry on the A59 at Harrogate at 8.52pm last night.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Crews confirmed no signs of fire to vehicle or tanker on arrival and that the smoke sighted came from overheated brakes only.

“Crews cooled the brakes using a hose reel jet. Police attended to assist with traffic management while this was in progress.

“The incident was left with the driver who will seek professional advice to ensure vehicle is safe to drive again. All brakes were sufficiently cooled and checked using a thermal imaging camera.”
