Erratic driving, threats of violence and a crash: Two arrested near York after series of incidents

Two people have been arrested in connection with a series of incidents which began in Scarborough and ended near York.

Around 6pm on Saturday (16 April) a silver VW Golf was seen driving erratically in the Foreshore Road area of Scarborough.

Some of the occupants were hanging out of the windows. They also got out of the car on several occasions and made threats of violence to members of the public.

Officers attempted to stop the car on the A171 near The Flask Inn south of Whitby, but it sped off and collided with another car.

That same evening the car was seen in Pickering, where police followed it to the A64.

The car again made off and it was pursued towards York where a stinger brought it to a stop.

Two men, aged 37 and 23, both occupants of the car, were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.

“Both men have been released under investigation pending further enquiries,” a North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said.

Police are asking any witnesses who have not already contacted them, and who saw the car being driven on Scarborough seafront, the A171 or A64, to get in touch.

Numbers are below.
