Bold new look planned for prominent York pub

Plans are in to give a prominent York pub a striking new look.

The Gillygate would look very different under plans now submitted by Star Pubs and Bars.

The internal redecoration is described as minor. Externally, however, the pub on Gillygate would change colour.

There would also be new signs painted onto the front and side of the venue.

A large feature lantern would be fitted above entrance. “This light will provide safe illumination to the entrance doorway to provide safe passage for customers as they enter and leave the premises,” a planning statement says.

“The new decorations will enhance the appearance of the pub and the signs themselves will replicate the impact of the existing signs.”

A Star Pubs spokesperson said: “We intend to undertake a major upgrade of the pub in early 2026 and are currently in the planning stages of the process.”

The Gillygate has been through a number of tenants since Brian Furey left partly due to the energy price hikes in 2020.

In 2021 it was put on the market at a passing rent of £75,000. The rent advertised on the website today is £43,900.
