York youth centre plans a new sports pitch – and they need your help!

A York charity is aiming to install an all-weather pitch for young people in the city – and have launched a crowdfunder campaign to help get them over the finish line.

Door 84, based on Lowther Street in York, have big plans for an all-weather pitch at their site to help benefit the local community.

The charity and youth centre have launched a crowdfunder to raise the last £2,800 required to cover the full cost.

The idea first became a real possibility at the end of 2025 when Door 84 was awarded a grant of £30,000 by York & North Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Since then the team have been busy fundraising and have also received ‘generous support’ from York Children’s Trust and Minster Lions Club. With just £2,800 left to raise the team are turning to the public for their support with a crowdfunder campaign.

Once installed, the pitch will get frequent use from the various groups that attend Door 84 each week, including the multiple youth clubs that are on offer for 8 to 17 year olds.

However, the plan is for it to be available to many other groups such as other charities or voluntary sector groups, as well as the possibility of renting it out to the public for casual kickabouts, or practice sessions for 5-a-side teams.

Being in the heart of York, it is an accessible site and the aim is to encourage and enable more physical activity in those who are less able to travel to the other sports facilities available around the city.

“From speaking to young people who come to Door 84, we know how much they value having access to spaces to play sport and take part in social, physical activity,” said George Arksey youth manager at Door 84.

“This is particularly true for those from a low-income household, who may not be able to travel to take part in sport, or perhaps can’t afford the costs associated with many out of school clubs.

“Our vision with this project is to overcome these barriers, and make sport much more accessible to young people growing up in central York.”

Door 84 released an update on their fundraising page yesterday (Tuesday) thanking everyone for their support so far, and they’ve ‘been able to give the green light on the project getting started, and the first steps began this morning’.
