York students picked for Team GB – in the world frisbee championships!

Students from a York school have been selected to represent the country in Ultimate Frisbee.

Fulford School in York are celebrating after 19 students were selected to represent Great Britain in Ultimate Frisbee, across the women’s and open Under-17 and Under-20 national squads.

Players selected for the U17 squads – alongside a further five talented students from across Yorkshire – will represent Great Britain at the European Youth Ultimate Championships, which will take place this August in Vienna.

Meanwhile, those selected for the U20 teams will travel to Logroño, Spain, to compete at the World Junior Ultimate Championships, where the world’s best young Ultimate players gather to compete on the global stage.

These are some of the country’s most competitive youth teams, and highlights the rapid growth and success of Ultimate Frisbee at the school.

The amazing achievement reflects not only the skill and dedication of the students, but also the passion and commitment of Physics teacher and Ultimate Frisbee coach Matthew Carson.

Mr Carson has been instrumental in bringing the sport to the school and growing it within the student community.

“I’m incredibly proud of all the students who have been selected to represent Great Britain,” said Mr Carson.

“To have 19 players from one school chosen across the national squads is an extraordinary achievement.

“Ultimate Frisbee has really taken off at Fulford School over the past few years, and it’s fantastic to see the students’ dedication and teamwork rewarded with opportunities to compete at the highest level.”

The group of selected students are fundraising to support the trip and are hoping to raise a total of £40,000 – with any additional funds being offered to support future students who sometimes don’t even trial due to the costs associated with playing sport at elite level.
