York shop launches closing down sale

A York city centre shop has launched a closing down sale months after opening.

Clothes shop Diltane Hatters opened on Spurriergate last spring.

It sells hats and scarves. But now signs in the window says “Everything Must Go – 50% Off”.

Diltane is in the unit formerly occupied by the jewellery store Beaverbrooks, which moved to Davygate in 2023.

That unit, number 4 Spurriergate, went up for sale for £500,000 in December 2023.

The building dates back to the 1840s, but the shopfront is a 20th century addition.

Under the bold Coney Street Riverside scheme, it would remain. But the building next door, currently home to Boots, would be demolished.

Diltane is not the only York store with a closing down sale.

A sale is on at Deichmann on Davygate. It is due to close on 28 March but the European shoe company says it is looking for suitable alternative locations in the city.
