A new gift shop opening in one of York’s historic landmarks has announced its opening date.
Monk Bar Shop will open inside the titular gatehouse on Wednesday 7 July.
It was reported earlier this year that it was set to be converted into a shop following the approval of a planning application – and now it’s preparing to open to the public.
The Grade I-listed building was previously home to the Richard III Experience museum which closed in 2020.
The new shop is run by the owners of The Yorkshire Soap Company, Warren Booth and Marcus Doyle, who also own York’s Imaginarium and Shambles-based Society of Alchemists.
The duo have also recently acquired number 64 Goodramgate, which marks their second Grade I listed property and what will become their fifth shop.
Monk Bar Shop is described on social media as a ‘historical shopping experience’, and will offer products including replica historical wear, soft toy dragon plushies, stationery, perfume, and gift items.

Inside, the space has been transformed with display tables, free standing shelves, and vintage bookshelves – and looked over by the shop’s own custom designed dragon.
