A colourful York shop has closed after a year’s trading.
Notting Hill Jacket opened on Low Ousegate last February. It was the business’s second branch, with the original trading on Portobello Road in London.
It sells reversible patterned quilted jackets which are mostly designed in Notting Hill and then made in India.
Some of the fabrics came from countries like Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. The handmade jackets featured embroidery, patchworks and are made from mostly natural materials like pure cotton.
Run by Ehsanullah Takanai and his brother Nangialai, they set up here after they had a lot of customers from York and Edinburgh travelling all the way to London for their products.

Nangialai told us when they opened: “We got an opportunity in York, so we started,” he said. “If we have customers from York it’s better to go there.”
Now though, Notting Hill Jacket has emptied the shop of all the jackets and bags and closed.
We asked the team why they’ve gone but have yet to hear back.
Number 3 Low Ousegate was previously home to gaming hub Geek Retreat, which closed in December 2023.
It is a a four storey Georgian Grade II listed building.
