York restaurant’s window smashed ‘with a weapon’

The team at a York restaurant is clearing up today after its window was smashed.

In what was clearly a concerted attack, a huge hole has been left in the window of Mumbai Lounge on Fossgate.

Someone must have used concerted force to break through what is reinforced glass.

The damage is to the window on the Lady Peckett’s Yard side of the Indian restaurant.

Owner Rakib Ali told YorkMix: “Somebody broke it last night. I think it’s happened after 3.30am this morning.”

The act of criminal damage scattered broken glass across chairs and the floor in the restaurant.

“I think they’ve used some kind of weapon. Because there isn’t any kind of brick inside. And the window is quite strong.”

He said no one entered the building so it wasn’t a burglary. “They just wanted to break it.

“I’m furious. I don’t know why they’ve done that – it’s for no reason.”

The window is being boarded up so the restaurant can open tonight – it has a lot of bookings.

Police have been informed. Mr Ali said they are now looking at CCTV on Fossgate to see if they can identify the perpetrator.

Mumbai Lounge has been running since 2010

He said this was not the first act of vandalism he’s encountered recently.

“I left my car on Fossgate to let someone out from Lady Peckett’s Yard. It was a Saturday night, round about 6.30pm

“Somebody came out from nowhere, he got his keys out and scratched all the way on my car.”

A doorman in the street witnessed it, “and we’ve got him on the CCTV camera. And I think it’s the same guy who has done that one last night”.

North Yorkshire Police have been informed and are investigating.

“Somebody doesn’t like me, I don’t know why,” Mr Ali added.

Mumbai Lounge has been trading in York since 2010 and is a popular part of the restaurant scene in York, with a 4.5 out of 5 rating on TripAdvisor.
