York residents can now sign up for 2026 garden waste collections after price increase

Eligible York households can now sign up for 2026 garden waste collections – but the price has gone up.

Collections run fortnightly between March and December. This year the annual cost is £52, up from £49 in 2025.

Cllr Nigel Ayre, leader of the opposition Lib Dem group on City of York Council, criticised the increase, saying “charges have increased by 13 per cent since they were first introduced and the effects are being felt in the most deprived communities”.

But the council says the increase is due to the rising cost of operating the service, and it is the same price as for garden waste collections in North Yorkshire.

Households are urged to subscribe before Friday 13 February to guarantee they’re subscribed and have received their bin sticker before collections start again from Monday 2 March.

You can do so online here or by ringing 01904 551551.

A 50 per cent discount on the charge (£26) is available for those residents in receipt of Council Tax Support or those registered as having severe mental impairment (SMI).

City of York Council says: “There are alternative options available to dispose of garden waste. It can be composted at home or can be taken free of charge to the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) at Hazel Court and Towthorpe.

“The council has discounted home composters available to buy for £15 from HWRCs.”
