York ‘hidden gem’ pub looks to extend its opening hours

A York pub’s opening hours could be extended if a recently-lodged application is approved.

Red Oak Taverns, the company which owns the Minster Inn in Marygate, has applied to change the pub’s licence to allow it to open and serve alcohol from 8am daily.

It would continue to close at half past midnight from Sunday to Thursday and at 1.30am on Friday and Saturday and stop serving drinks half an hour before.

The application stated they also wanted to do away with outdated conditions and update those concerning children in the premises.

Minster Inn’s layout would also change if Red Oak Tavern’s licensing application is approved by City of York Council.

The application stated layout changes were to cover works being done at the premises.

Minster Inn is based in an Edwardian building and serves a range of drinks including real ale and also offers stone baked pizza, served both in its cosy rooms and beer garden.

It scores a 4.6/5 rating on TripAdvisor. A recent reviewer described it as “a hidden gem – really nice pub, friendly welcome, fast service”.

Another wrote: “Really enjoyed our visit to this super friendly pub. Staff were knowledgeable about the range of drinks and the pizza was great.”

It also offers guest rooms and is next door to St Mary’s Abbey and opposite York’s Museum Gardens.

The Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) describes it as a historical pub of rare intactness with a front bar, two side rooms and a covered, heated rear outdoor area.

The licensing application is open for public comments until Monday, 15 June.
