York cyclist injured in crash with van ‘left sprawled in road for three hours’

A cyclist injured in a crash with a van in York was left ‘sprawled in the road’ for three hours before an ambulance arrived.

Emergency services were called to Burnholme Drive at about 11.45am yesterday (Friday), where the white van and the bike had collided.

Resident Andy Mullenger described what then happened as “absolutely horrific”.

He said the police arrived shortly after the crash and cordoned off the street.

But he added: “The cyclist was then left lying motionless, sprawled out in the cordoned off road until around 2.45pm, when an ambulance finally arrived.

“Three hours in critical condition, lying in the middle of the road waiting for urgent medical care after being hit by a van. Barely responsive.

“I know the emergency services are stretched, but what I witnessed today genuinely disgusted me. This country is on its knees.”

Andy also pointed out that the street was cordoned off for all this time, causing disruption to traffic.

The good news is, Andy has learned that the cyclist, a man, didn’t sustain any major injuries and is recovering.

We have asked the Yorkshire Ambulance Service for a response, and will update when it comes through.
