York centre to expand with new hall for community events

An extension to the St Nicks Environment Centre in York has been approved.

City of York Council approved plans for the timber-clad and lime render extension to the charity’s building in St Nicholas Field, off Rawdon Avenue.

The charity’s plans stated the extension would reflect the principles of sustainability, energy conservation and production from renewable sources that their building was designed according to.

The development is set to expand the footprint of the building, which was constructed in 2000, from 127sqm to 265sqm.

It is set to alter the layout of the building by creating a new main hall and adjoining kitchen, store, volunteer break area and accessible toilet.

The new main hall would be available to book for community events in addition to those run by on-site staff.

A new lift is set to be installed to provide an accessible route to the first floor.

The building’s current thermally inefficient lean-to entrance area is also set to be replced.

The extension will be topped by a sweeping sedum roof, mirroring that of the existing building.

Solar panels are set to be installed on the roof of the extension.

Plans stated: “The new extension to the centre will be built to high standards of sustainable design embodying low carbon approaches, updating features already in use on the site to current recommendations.”
