Updated: York bridge reopens after police incident

A York bridge was closed for more than two hours due to a police incident overnight.

It was cordoned off to all road users and pedestrians from shortly before 11pm on Monday.

Two ambulances and three fire vehicles were at the scene. A police van and tape blocked off the bridge about halfway across.

The entrance to the bridge was also coned off.

A crew from York Rescue Boat were in the water close to the City Cruises boatyard.

It was due to a woman being on the wrong side of the bridge.

North Yorkshire Police issued this update at 1.20am today (Tuesday): “Lendal Bridge has now reopened after emergency services brought a woman to safety from the bridge.

“It was closed to traffic and pedestrians at 10.50pm on Monday.

“The woman has been taken to hospital by ambulance to receive the medical care and support she requires.

“Thank you for your patience while we worked to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.”

Earlier, North Yorkshire Police said at 11.17pm: “Traffic alert for York city centre: Lendal Bridge in York has been closed to motorists and pedestrians while the emergency services deal with an incident.

“Please avoid the area until further notice.”
