Updated: Woman charged with arson in Great Ayton

The woman arrested in connection with the arson in Great Ayton on 8 April has been charged with arson with intent to endanger life, and burglary. 

She has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at York Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday).

Police investigating the cause of a fire at residential premises in Woodbine Close, Great Ayton have arrested a woman on suspicion of arson and are appealing for information.

The fire was reported to the police at around 6.20am on Wednesday 8 April by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Detectives investigating the cause of the fire are appealing to anyone who has any information or saw any suspicious activity in the area between 4.30am and 6.30am, to get in touch.

They’re also appealing to anyone who has private CCTV or doorbell footage and passing motorists with dashcams, that may have caught any suspicious activity on camera to contact them.

The woman, who is aged in her 40s, remains in police custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Tom Barker of North Yorkshire Police’s Investigation Hub, said: “While we are investigating this fire as arson and will be of concern to local people, thankfully no injuries have been reported and I am satisfied that it does appear to be an isolated incident and the wider public are not impacted.

“We will continue to work with North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service over the coming days to establish the full facts and cause of the fire.
