‘We’re devastated’: North Yorkshire farm shop and restaurant closes suddenly

A farm shop and restaurant with food described as “beyond perfection” has shut suddenly.

And staff have been told they have all been laid off.

Spuds & Berries, the farm shop, restaurant and pick your own venue on Hull Road near Hemingbrough, closed on Thursday.

It has been partially cleared out and there is a notice on the locked gate stating: “We apologise but Spuds and Berries will not be open today.”

A member of staff told YorkMix: “We were told on Thursday morning that the business had closed and we had all been made redundant.

“The shop and restaurant were being cleared out into an auctioneer’s van.

“We had been open as normal and nothing seemed to be different. We have all worked right up until it closed and we won’t be getting our final pay.

“We are all absolutely devastated and will miss our regulars.”

The venue’s Facebook page has also been deleted, and it is listed as “permanently closed” on Google.

Spuds & Berries was a popular destination, both as a farm shop and a restaurant. A 5-star Google review left a month ago said: “Great farm shop, lovely food in the restaurant, friendly staff and if you are lucky enough to encounter the owner, Ross, he has the best sense of humour ever! Cannot recommend the place highly enough.”

On Tripadvisor, where it has a 4.3/5 rating, most diners were full of praise: “Excellent food, the sausages with bubble and squeak were beyond perfection,” said a visitor in January.

Another said the food was “stunning” and “outstanding”.

But the latest review, headlined “Burns Night Supper Disaster” was not favourable. “Heavily advertised on Facebook as a Burns Night Supper as three courses for £20,” it said.

“We booked for a party of four at 7.45. On arrival the Supper had increased to £25. Stating a printing error. Funny how Facebook still clearly stated £20.

“The original three course menu consisted of Scotch Broth soup followed by Haggis Neeps and Tatties and then Iron Bru cheesecake. However, there was no soup (the chef had an accident) no cheese cake (part of the same accident) Really? What a joke.”
