Unique York shop closes – Set to be replaced by chocolate-themed café

A unique shop in York has closed – and it’s set to be replaced by a café.

The Echo Of York on Newgate immersed visitors in the environment of an old school newspaper office.

It sold gifts made by York and Yorkshire creators. These included chocolate, mugs, tea towels, alcohol, stationery and candles.

It was founded by Viv Williams, Luke Horton and James McKennan.

The decor was all based around the 1930s. When it opened, Luke said it was “not only is it a gift shop, it’s a step back into time”.

It closed earlier this year. Soon the building will be occupied by a branch of Chocolate Bar By Bullion.

Bullion is a craft chocolate maker founded in 2010. Fourteen years later founder Max Scotford fulfilled a dream by opening his first Chocolate Bar Café.

The company announced the plan on social media, saying: “We’re opening on Shambles Market in York.

“15 Newgate has stood here in some form for nearly 700 years, and we’re proud to become part of its story.

“York, the home of chocolate in Yorkshire – we’re so excited to begin this next chapter.”
